Program Description

The Reserve Officer's Training Program (ROTC) is a pre-commissioning program for the United States Army. Students who finish the program and graduate from a four-year college or university will receive a commission and become an officer in the US Army, National Guard or Reserve Forces. Students who attend and complete ROTC courses receive regular college credits in addition to the credits received in the academic discipline of their choice. Army ROTC is a four-year program consisting of the Basic Course taken during the freshman and sophomore years and the Advanced Course taken during the junior and senior years of college. Completing the Basic Course or earning the basic course credit is a prerequisite to enrolling in the Advanced Course. Basic course credit is given to students who have attended any military service basic training or to students who have attended the Leader's Training Course (LTC) at Fort Knox, KY. There is no service obligation incurred when taking the Basic Course (100- and 200-level courses) or to attend LTC at Fort Knox. The Basic Course is open to students who want to learn about leadership and the US Army. It allows students to discover for themselves whether they want to continue on with the ROTC Advanced Course. Upon successful completion of the Basic Course or basic course credit, students are eligible to contract with ROTC and attend the Advanced Course.

Army ROTC courses are conducted through Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) via a cross-enrollment agreement with Eastern Washington University (EWU). Students can earn the credits for the Basic Course while enrolled at SFCC and SCC in preparation for the Advanced Course. These classes are held at SFCC. SCC students must travel to SFCC for classes.

Upon successful completion of the Basic Course or basic course credit, students are eligible to apply for the Advanced Course at any college or university that offers US Army ROTC. Students who finish the Basic Course or receive basic course credit with 45 quarter credits can contract with ROTC and receive a monthly stipend. These stipends are: $350-Sophomore year, $450-junior year and $500-senior year. Also, students will receive approximately $600 for attending the mandatory 5-week training camp during the summer between their junior and senior years.

If a student doesn't want to serve on active duty after receiving their commission, they can apply for a Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) Scholarship prior to contracting and serve in the National Guard or Reserves. The GRFD scholarship pays the ROTC stipend as stated above plus the GI Bill, the GI Bill kicker, Federal Tuition Assistance ($4,500 yearly), reserve pay at the E-5 rate, a book stipend of $1,200 per year and room and board costs up to $10,000 a year.

National Guard And Reserve Soldiers

Students in the National Guard or Reserve Forces can apply for the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) at the beginning of their Sophomore year. To qualify, students must have at least 45 quarter credit hours and contract with the US Army ROTC program. Students will receive Federal Tuition Assistance of $4,500 a year, the GI Bill, the GI Bill kicker and receive drill pay as a Cadet (E-5).

Two-Year Program

College students who have not taken the first two years of ROTC can become eligible to earn a commission in the US Army by attending the 5-week Leader's Training Course (LTC) at Fort Knox, KY. Upon successful completion of LTC, students also become eligible for a 2-year scholarship. This scholarship provides for full tuition, book stipends, and a monthly ROTC stipend during the academic year.

Cost

All books, supplies and equipment needed for the ROTC program are provided by the US Army at no cost to the students that are enrolled in ROTC courses.

Military Obligation

Students who enroll in the Basic Course incur no military obligation. All college credits earned from the ROTC course count like any other college elective. Students enrolled in the Advanced Course do incur a military obligation with a variety of options available to them. There are opportunities for full-time professional military careers and part-time Reserve or National Guard tours. The Reserve or National Guard commitment is two days a month and 14 days of Annual Training (AT) a year with possible call-ups to support the State and or Federal Government.
